A Second View: Roll DIDSON 90°

One can obtain additional information about a viewed object by rolling the sonar 90°. With the sonar horizontal one gets an apparent “top view” of the object showing detail in range and left-right (cross-range in the horizontal dimension). Rolling the sonar 90° provides height information. The view of the object becomes an apparent “side-view” with range and height detailed. The combination of these two views gives complementary information about the 3D aspects of the object. For a few more examples see Mine Views, Cone Mine and Pile Inspection.

Roll Didson
Rolling DIDSON 90° provides a look at the side of the pool. The cross is in its proper orientation and you see the lines marking the pool bottom and water surface. The tiles are smoother than both the textured wall and grout between the tiles. The tiles backscatter less sound so appear darker than the wall and grout.
Roll Didson
What at first appears to be rocks on the lake bottom, are actually people. This secondary view is attained by rolling DIDSON 90°.
