Sea Lion and Herring

"We were trying to understand the behavioral
response
of overwintering herring to predators
(sea lions in our case). The equipment was
deployed from a vessel at
300+ ft to get the
DIDSON and other equipment in the vicinity
of the herring school. We collected data
(downward) from above the school and from
within the school (downward and horizontal). The Stellar Sea Lions
were observed feeding on the school only at night."
The data were collected near Juneau, Alaska
in collaboration with the Alaska Fisheries
Science Center in Auke Bay.
